NZ vs AUS Highlights, 1st T20: Tim David, Marsh help Australia secure last-ball win over New Zealand in 216 chase
Mitchell Marsh, the Australian captain, turned in a power-packed all-round performance that was followed by a brilliant knock by Tim David at the end of the final ball to finish triumphantly against New Zealand in their high-scoring series opener in Wellington.
ven after Devon Conway returned with a fifty from a form slump They had 216 runs to chase, and Australia still seemed like they were going to lose. However, David came on board with his 31 off just 10 balls including one four through the leg-side off Tim Southee which sealed Australia’s fabulous getaway.
Australia claimed first blood in their fight for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy which previously only went to the victor of bilateral ODI series between both these sides. For both teams, the three-match series is important preparation ahead for T20 World Cup which is now just over three months away.
Marsh, Tim David star in huge chase
In Australia’s batting order, there was no room left for Steven Smith but Travis Head returned after missing out on the West Indies series. They opened together for the first time since T20Is began in that format. Nonetheless, neither did so successfully.
Marsh was left to it, and he did not disappoint. Marsh's death was handled as the disdain that came with it went for runs to make 50 off just 29 balls. However, they had no luck as they fell away, and ended up needing an imposing thirty-two runs in nine balls for victory. But David opened his account with a boundary against Adam Milne before hitting two consecutive sixes to bring down Australia’s score to sixteen runs off the last over of the match.
Towards the end of the final over Southee bowled a few yorkers well but once again David showed his strength by hitting a six on leg-side over a full-tossed fourth delivery of the 20th over. A little later he swatted through wide long-on, where two fielders were converging, and it went for four underlining another incredible chase which underlined their firepower. Moreover, this also shows that Steve Smith might not be able to find himself a room at T20 World Cup. These two bowlers have shown plenty of hostile swing bowling at breakneck speeds – Ferguson clocked 150 kmph!
Head was caught by Milne and Australias first wicket down. However, Australias achievement halted when Ferguson bowled Maxwell. Ferguson had an outstanding over in which he bowled under pressure and landed accurate yorkers as New Zealand took control of the match. But what New Zealand regretted in the end was their casualness in fielding, notably when Glenn Phillips missed a catch at the boundary as Marsh reached 36 runs.
Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have taken some rest since the last day of the test summer three weeks ago. Their first T20I after the T20 World Cup 2022 putting out their best bowling attack.
Starc started on fire, swinging past Allen's bat first ball to complete an excellent maiden over. He came back in his next over and got Allen out without giving him any width.
Until he conceded 16 runs in the penultimate over of the innings, Starc had been outstanding among banters. In addition to being punished for 15 runs off his last over, Cummins clever variety of slower balls mostly kept him at bay.
Adam Zampa conceded 1/42 in his three overs. And another beating is offered to him. Australia let slip 15 extras, becoming the first team that had ever come up with four back-to-back T20I scores of over 200.
On a brighter note for Australia though, Marsh was using slower balls well and managed to dismiss Conway. Making figures of 1-21 off 3 Overs. As Marcus Stoinis missed the series, Marsh did not use himself against West Indies but came up as a batter.
